Description
INTRODUCTION I thank the editor and the contributors for the invitation to write this epilogue which I offer not so much as the 'last word' but in dialogue with the several voices in the collection. In the following reflections I consider five questions prompted by my reading of these excellent papers. First, I ponder the very notion of 'women's groups', core to the experiences presented here. Second, I consider the centrality of Christianity in their original formation and continuing transformation. Third, I review their diverse agendas in terms of the continuum from welfare to empowerment interrogated by Regina Scheyvens (this issue, 11). Fourth, I turn to the dialectic between self-help and help from others and the associated relation between local and non-local agendas in women's organizations. Finally, I ponder how differences between women are negotiated, not just on the basis of age and rank, but also those emergent class distinctions Anne Dickson-Waiko discerns between ol grassroots mama and ol save meri, 'rural or grassroots mothers' and 'educated women' in Tok Pisin.
